We’ve all heard it, New York City breeds point guards. Just a few of these NYC bred point guards include huge names such as Kenny Anderson, Sebastian Telfair, Stephon Marbury, Bob Cousy, Pearl Washington, Kenny Smith, Mark Jackson and Nate Archibald.
All it took was one game for Desure Buie to convince me that he has the ability to join NYC’s lineage of legendary point guards. Some people might say I’m crazy, some people will agree with me. Some may question “How can you make such a big statement based off one game?”
#16 Wings Academy (28-2) vs. #1 Oak Hill Academy (45-0)
Christ the King High School, Thursday, April 2nd, 6:00 P.M.
Desure Buie and Wings Academy took on #1 ranked Oak Hill Academy in the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School Nationals Quarterfinal game. If you don’t know exactly how good Oak Hill is, just know that every single player on the roster is expected to play Division 1 basketball (that’s including the kids who are buried in the bench).
Desure’s match up was Terrence Phillips, NBA star Brandon Jenning’s little brother. It just so happened that almost everybody that was on the court for Oak Hill matched up with Desure at one point. By the end of the game, I don’t think a single soul in the gym wanted any part of him. Desure single handily made Oak Hill’s defense look like they were wearing roller blades. He definitely has that NYC handle, that kid is nice with the rock. However, not only can he dribble, he actually does something with his dribble. There are hundreds of kids in this city who can dribble, but that’s all that most of them can do. Desure will make the best possible play while making your best defender look like he needs some ankle braces.
I guarantee you that I wouldn’t be writing if it wasn’t well deserved, however, this kid deserves some more attention. ESPN doesn’t even have him ranked Top 100, but on April 2nd, he was the best player on the court. If you were a spectator that didn’t follow high school basketball, you would say the same. Don’t get me wrong, his name is out there, and a lot of college coaches want him. He chose to attend Hofstra University, and I’m sure he will have a bright future there. It does put him on a stage where he can showcase his skills. However, I believe that he should be put on a bigger stage. I’m sure ESPN has their reasons for not nationally ranking him. They also had their reasons for not nationally ranking Damian Lillard, Russell Westbrook, and Steph Curry. I’m not saying that he will be as good as any of them, but the ranking system didn’t seem to like them either.
Just like every other point guard, Desure wouldn’t be as good as he is if it wasn’t for his team. Desure and the rest of his Wings squad have heart, a lot of it. Even though they came out with the loss, they represent what NYC basketball players should really look like. The talent on Wings wasn’t even close to the talent on Oak Hill, but the score definitely was close. They earned my respect, and they definitely should earn yours. Desure, keep doing what you do, work hard, and you’ll have a bright future.
