The Brooklyn Nets had a much-needed boost when they traded for Thaddeus Young. With Brook Lopez having a terrific final third of the regular season, Thad Young slotted in and fed off the momentum that Brooklyn were getting.
But now, Young is in control over his future and reports are leaning towards Young leaving Brooklyn.
Young, despite his status as a longtime King favorite, is likewise believed to be leaning toward bypassing the $10-ish million he is owed for 2015-16 to do the same.
The far greater source of uncertainty is the size and scope of the contracts they would command as free agents, given that Brooklyn risks cutting into its July 2016 spending money if it lavishes too much on the incumbents.
The happiest ending, of course, would be Lopez and/or Young deciding to play out next season on their current deals in the name of joining the free-agent bonanza that looms in a year, when the salary cap spikes massively.
This is what it’s all about, all the free agents will be thinking about the revised salary cap that’ll come next year. Young’s clock is ticking. Next year could be the last time that he will get a big payday, so that boy better strap in and go get his money.
