Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta said that Greg Oden has been training on campus and could make an attempt for another NBA comeback.
Oden played for Matta at Ohio State for one season back in 2007, where the Buckeyes lost the in the National Title game to a Florida squad led by Joakim Noah, Al Horford, and Corey Brewer.
Ohio State will be playing in the Moda Center tomorrow in Portland for the NCAA tournament, ironically the home arena to the Portland Trailblazers, the team that drafted Oden first overall in 2007.
Matta said that Oden has been doing “high level” training at Ohio State for the past six months.
“Quite honestly, I haven’t seen Greg look this good since when he played for us back in the day at Ohio State,” Matta said. “His attitude is off the charts. He went through a lot. You look at Greg’s life, how difficult things have been. I know that he is a kid that never wanted to let people down. The injuries, you know, none of us can prevent those. I know there’s part of him that wishes that stuff couldn’t have happened. I still swear he was going to be one of the greatest to ever play in the NBA just from the year I was with him.”
Oden played in 82 games for the Blazers in four seasons after leaving Ohio State after his freshmen season. After being out of the league for four seasons, Oden played in 23 games for the Miami Heat last year.
