Shortly after releasing her third solo studio album under GOOD Music and Def Jam, Teyana Taylor elected to announce her retirement from music and set the dates for what many expected to be her final tour.
“Baby, I got to do it for my mental health,” she said.
“I have to do it for my emotional health,” she said. “I have to do it for my kids, so I can stay alive for my kids. Until I’m free, until I can get [Def Jam] to release me, yes I want to retire. I don’t want to do this anymore.”
Less than a year later, Teyana Taylor sat down for an interview with former NFL MVP Cam Newton. During their conversation, the multi-talented creative said that the retirement wasn’t permanent, but rather the result of her frustration with Def Jam and GOOD Music.
“It’s not that I retired permanently,” Taylor explained.
“I just don’t feel like I want to move another inch for a company.”
In the meantime, the New York native has directed her energy toward directing videos, performing and acting in feature films. Now, it appears that she may be on her way back to sharing new music. Earlier this week, she unveiled a brief snippet of what appears to be a new track. While promising, Taylor hasn’t given any indication that her dispute with Def Jam or GOOD Music is resolved or that she will be releasing a project anytime soon. However, a snippet is just enough to get her fans excited about the possibility of what may lie ahead.
“I’m happy she’s returning to music and not allowing the industry or anyone else to discourage her,” one fan tweeted.
“I’m happy she didn’t really quit making music,” another reply reads.
