On October 18 the NFL owners had a meeting in New York to discuss national anthem protests. The owners were meeting to discuss how to handle players protesting during the national anthem. At this meeting Texans owner Bob McNair made a comment that is mind numbingly stupid.
After Jerry Jones made a speech requesting a mandate that would require players to stand for the anthem McNair said, “We can’t have the inmates running the prison.” Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent, a former player, took the comment personally. Vincent was offended and reportedly said, “in all his years of playing in the NFL — during which, he said, he had been called every name in the book, including the N-word — he never felt like an ‘inmate’.”
McNair must have realized how stupid his comment was because he would later pull Vincent aside to apologize.
When news of McNair’s comment surfaced he released a statement that was tweeted out by the organization.

Even if he was using a figure of speech, McNair should have realized comparing your work force (which is predominantly African American) to criminals isn’t very smart.
