Oklahoma City Thunder draft pick Terrance Ferguson has missed the team’s first Summer League games in Orlando. The rookie’s absence is not due to any complications with his NBA contract. Rather, he has not received clearance from FIBA to make his way to the NBA.
Following via Erik Horne of the Oklahoman:
Players coming from overseas are required to get a letter of clearance from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in order to play, and Ferguson hasn’t received his yet, a Thunder spokesperson told The Oklahoman on Monday.
Ferguson opted to play professional basketball in Australia rather than playing in college, a decision he has been very vocal about due to the NCAA’s controversial stances.
It’s unclear when Ferguson will receive his clearance. The Orlando Summer League concludes on Thursday, making his debut for the Thunder questionable. If he is not cleared in time, Thunder fans will have to wait until the preseason in October to get their first glimpses of game action from Ferguson.
Ferguson is among several first-round picks who have not played in Summer League, yet.
