Former NFL quarterback Tarvaris Jackson died in a single-car crash in Alabama on Sunday night, a police spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY Sports on Monday. He was 36.
Jackson was driving on a road a few miles south of Montgomery, Alabama, at around 8:50 p.m. Sunday when his 2012 Chevrolet Camaro left the road, hit a tree and flipped, according to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency trooper Michael Carswell. Jackson was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
Prior to entering the NFL, Jackson played two years at the collegiate level as an Arkansas Razorback. Jackson would go on to be a high-profile second round draft pick for the Minnesota Vikings in the 2006 NFL Draft.
Jackson would start only two games his rookie season followed by 12 in his sophomore campaign. Following his second year, Jackson played out the rest of his career as a solid backup, though he did start 14 games for the Seattle Seahawks in 2011.
Jackson’s final season in the NFL came in 2016 and he moved on to coaching quickly after he was released by the Seahawks. Jackson served as the quarterback’s coach at Tennessee State just last season.
