‘She’s My Hero.’
That’s the exact sentiment you get when you hear this song and the circumstances around this case. Talib Kweli is known to use his platform to speak about real world issues. The ‘Last Ones’ rapper brings domestic violence to the forefront with ‘She’s My Hero.’
Based on the true story of 14-year-old Bresha Meadows, this song shines a light on the effects of domestic violence on a child. Meadows’ father was an abusive one who continuously abused her and her mother, Brandi. One day, Bresha shot and killed her father while he slept.
The title of the song comes from a quote from Brandi. On Bresha’s perceived courageous act:
“She is my hero. I wasn’t strong enough to get out and help us all.”
This song hits home for many of us as we all know of someone who has been in an abusive relationship or situation. They all need heroes to save them from themselves as most of the time, they are unable to leave the situation.
