Taika Waititi has been a busy man recently. After 2017’s smash hit Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi got to work on two separate television series; The Mandalorian, a Star Wars Spinoff set to premiere on Disney+, and an FX series based off his 2014 film, What We Do in the Shadows. Somehow, he also found time to shoot his own passion project: Jojo Rabbit, an absurdist World War 2 satire. Waititi offered an update on Jojo Rabbit while speaking on his two forthcoming series this week at the Television Critics Association.
Waititi confirmed that expects to release the film theatrically in the fall. He also confirmed that the film is currently undergoing reshoots but that he also expects to finish by the end of springtime. The New-Zealand-based director also offered a tidbit regarding the film’s tone that’s sure to excite Waititi-heads across the board. “It was very similar to the tone of my other films – not including Shadows and Ragnarok – like Wilderpeople, Boy and my earlier films. A fun balance of tone of comedy and drama”
Here’s the official synopsis of the film: “Jojo Rabbit, by Taika Waititi (Thor, Hunt For The Wilderpeople), blends his signature humor, pathos, and deeply compelling characters in a World War II satire about a ten-year-old boy who, ridiculed by his peers and misunderstood by his mother, can’t quite figure out how to fit in. As the naïve young German struggles to understand his place in an increasingly Fascist regime, he resorts to an imaginary friend who can offer advice and help him cope.”
An important detail left out of the synopsis is the fact that the boy’s imaginary friend is actually an imaginary Adolf Hitler. But wait, there’s more because that imaginary Hitler will be played by none other Waititi himself. So, there’s no way to predict what the film will be like, but I have no doubt it’ll be entertaining.
Jojo Rabbit stars Taika Waititi, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, Rebel Wilson, Thomasin McKenzie, and Roman Griffin.
