Are we far off from having another NBA team out of the United States? We already have the Toronto Raptors who represent Canada in the NBA. Could Mexico be next? Should we start calling it the North American Basketball Association soon? The Phoenix Suns want to make it happen.
Phoenix will host 2 regular season games in Mexico City vs. the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks next season and now the President of Phoenix, Jason Rowley, says they want to become the NBA team for Mexico. Per Kurt Herlin of Probasketballtalk:
Suns president Jason Rowley said at a news conference that the Suns “want to be the NBA team for Mexico.
Phoenix mayor Greg Stanton thanked Suns owner Robert Sarver and the team for a franchise “that is building bridges to Mexico and not walls.”
The Los Suns in Phoenix! I could definitely see it. With Phoenix doing 2 regular season games in Mexico, something that has never happened before, they could be actually be thinking of a move to Mexico City. Now nothing would happen soon, but with the game of basketball and the NBA growing all around the world, it is expected that they will branch out and create teams in other countries, like they began with Canada. Could Mexico be the next step?
