The Phoenix Suns have a right to be angry. Last year they had a record of 48-33 and still missed the playoffs in the western conference. While the Toronto Raptors had a 48-33 record in the eastern conference and were 3rd place in the conference, it would make any team angry. Now the Phoenix Suns want change in the playoff seeding and perhaps a new way of looking at the conferences. Not only has owner Robert Sarver showed his anguish with the current playoff seeding but Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has suggested ways of changing the conferences as well. He suggested moving Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, Indiana to the west. While moving all the Texas teams and New Orleans to the East. Some have suggested creating a top-16 playoff seeding which includes all conferences, but somethings just don’t make it plausible.
For example you would have to wonder about scheduling, rivalries, TV deals, and who knows what kind of impact on the revenue of the NBA it would have, because after all, the NBA is a business. Now the Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver has brought up the idea of abolishing the conferences in the last league’s board of owners meeting in October. It would be interesting to see, how it transpires but have no doubt a change will occur. Maybe not now, but within the next 20 years. Commissioner Adam Silver, who is already known for making quick and decisive actions, will research and look at ways to make the league better, and if eliminating the conferences makes the league more competitive and more profitable, then he will do it.
As for now, the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and the Oklahoma City Thunder will have to deal with their playoff problems, as all 3 elite teams are trying to make a name for themselves in the tough western conference.
