Cravens made headlines earlier for telling the Redskins that he wished to retire at the age of 22. Despite his wishes, the team hopped that Cravens would change his mind and return to the team. This move will give Cravens more time to figure out exactly what he wants to do.
The Redskins organization released this statement concerning Cravens:
“We sincerely hope that Su’a uses this time away from the club to reflect upon whether or not he’d like to resume his career in the National Football League in 2018.”
Cravens played solid in his rookie season. The former USC Trojan was seen as one of the teams top defensive backs coming into the season.
It is unknown why Cravens decided to “retire” so early. Earlier this year, a study was released that showed the brains of former NFL players had some form of CTE.
Regardless of what the issue is, it is bad enough to Cravens to make him want to retire from the sport he loves.Head coach Jay Gruden earlier this month stated:
“I’ve seen him at USC, I’ve watched him at practice. I’ve watched him play in games and I know he loves football. So I don’t think that’s the issue. There are things weighing on his mind that he has to take care of. If he gets those things cleared up, then sure we will take another look at him. He is one of our guys.”
Time will tell if Cravens will return to the Redskins. The Redskins currently sit at third in the NFC East with a 1-1 record. Cravens will miss the rest of this season but can come back next year if he wishes.
