Sony Pictures is bringing Street Fighter to the big screen. On Wednesday, June 26, the studio slapped a release date of March 20, 2026 on the film adaptation of the classic Capcom arcade game.
With the film’s release date nearly two years in the future, little is known about the project. Previously, Danny and Michael Philippou were attached the movie, but the duo is unable to direct the film due to scheduling conflicts. Instead, they’ll lead A24’s Bring Her Back. As for the cast, less is known about the film’s potential lead or the role they’ll play in shaping the plot.
This isn’t the first time a studio has attempted to bring Street Fighter to the big screen. In 1994, Jean-Claude Van Damme starred as Guile alongside Ming-Na Wen and Raúl Juliá under the direction of Steven E. de Souza. Unlike the video game, the film didn’t earn rave reviews. Critic Stephen Holden of The New York Times called it a “a dreary, overstuffed hodgepodge of poorly edited martial arts sequences and often unintelligible dialogue.”
Fifteen years later, 20th Century Fox brought Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li to theaters. Kristin Kreuk played Chun-Li with support from Michael Clarke Duncan, Chris Klein and Neal McDonough. It generated $12.8 million at the box office against its $50 million budget and earned a 3% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
