Kevin Durant’s decision to join the Golden State Warriors came as a shock to most NBA fans. Perhaps more surprised than anyone were the small forward’s former teammates.
Reports surfaced that Durant had informed at least one teammate (Russell Westbrook) that he would be staying in OKC. He has since denied those rumors. Nevertheless, the validity of that speculation proves the surprising nature of his decision.
One teammate who was particularly surprised by Durant’s move is center Steven Adams. But while he didn’t expect the decision, he seems to be at ease with it. So he told Erik Horne of The Oklahoman:
“It was a surprise, mate, but yeah … oh well,” Adams shrugged. “If he’s happy, all good.”
That’s pretty much the right reaction to have if you’re Adams or another former teammate of KD’s.
Durant leaving the Thunder obviously hurts the team. It should be expected that the other players feel a bit betrayed by the decision especially coming off a season in which they were one win away from the Finals.
But at the end of the day, Kevin Durant did what he felt was best for him and his career. It’s hard to find fault in that.
