As a new retiree, Nash is open to helping the last team he played for re-build.
There’s no question that Steve Nash will be considered one of the best, hard-working, respected guys to ever grace the point guard position. Nash’s retirement press conference this week was full of reminiscent candor about his career, his accomplishments, successes, and failures.
Nash will be most known and glorified for his revolutionary time with Mike D’Antoni and the Phoenix Suns. His time as a Laker was more like a desperate stint that was cut short due to enduring injuries. Though Nash might feel more loyal and connected to Phoenix, he claims he’d want to help the Lakers in their efforts to attract free agents this summer.
Via Mark Medina and Mark Whicker of the LA Daily News:
Nash still left relishing his Lakers experience because of the front office and training staff providing endless support. So much that Nash said he would help with any free-agent pitches this offseason.
“Who knows what the future holds, but I’d love to see the franchise come back in full form,” Nash said at a press conference on Tuesday at the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo. “I’m definitely open to helping out.”
The Lakers need all the help they can get, at any capacity, to bring in top-tier free agents this summer. Nash is as respected and credible as they come, but it’s not like he experienced the pinnacle championship glory while in a Laker uniform. That’s usually the main pitch out of LA: come play for a (historically) winning franchise.
Still, if Nash is offering, the Lakers should and likely will take him up on his offer. You never know how relationships and interpersonal esteem could play a factor. Having Nash as a potential salesman can’t possibly hurt their efforts.
