It’s no question why the Golden State Warriors have opted to bring on Steve Nash in a player development position. The former two-time MVP is one of the best point guards of all time and considered one of the consummate masters of the game.
Nash will have the opportunity to work with the best shooting backcourt in the NBA, and with that comes working with last season’s MVP, Stephen Curry. In confirming his role with the Warriors, Nash was asked specifically how he plans on helping Curry. His initial response had nothing to do with basketball.
From Diamond Leung of San Jose Mercury News:
“His laundry?” Nash said, shrugging and smiling at a fundraiser in Toronto.
“I don’t know.” As I’ve told Steph, his skill level is so high that although we’ll be on the court together, I don’t know how much I can help him on the court. But through watching a little bit of film and talking, maybe I can help him with situations. But his skill level is incredible, and hopefully I’ll learn as much from him as he will from me.”
This honest answer from Nash obviously speaks to Curry’s insane level of play last season. Every player has room to improve, and every great player wants to, and I’m sure that Curry is anxious to have access to Nash’s basketball brain. The thought of Curry improving, let alone with Nash as his resource, is frankly a scary thought.
Other than the laundry joke, the best part about Nash’s answer was his desire to also learn from Curry, even though he’s retired. That’s the mark of a true student of the game, and that’s the kind of influence and passion the Warriors hired him for.
