Two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash wrote a piece for the Players’ Tribune calling for gun control. It was a strong, well-written piece, and we highly encourage everybody to read it in its entirety here. Here are some of the highlights, though.
Nash began by telling his readers that he was writing as a father of four, and he thinks of these continual shootings as a parent – as most parents probably do.
Nash expressed his rage and heartbrokenness in this moving piece:
I’m angry.
Innocent people are dying senselessly in a country that has so much to offer the world. Parents are losing their kids … kids are losing their parents … people are waking up one morning, expecting a normal day — and then never seeing another.
Nash laid out the always-shocking statistics on American gun violence, emphasizing the fact that Americans are 25 times more likely to die in gun homicides than people in other high-income countries.
Nash emphasized that change (more background checks, stricter regulation for semiautomatic weapons and assault rifles) needs to happen.
Nash articulated his support for the Parkland survivors, who have been outspoken in their desire for gun control.
Here’s how Nash ended his piece:
So can we agree on one thing?
Whether you’re a gun owner or not: We are all just trying to protect our families, and we are all just trying to keep our communities safe. We have to do something.
We are in this together.
