The NBA season is just under a month away from starting, and everyone will be watching the newly assembled Golden State Warriors. With the addition of Kevin Durant, the Warriors all-star lineup will be must watch basketball. It would’ve went differently, Durant would’ve signed to basically any other team in the NBA, including returning back to OKC, but he opted to take the risk and join the Warriors, and become the so-called ‘villains’ of the NBA. But why’d he do it? One thing Steve Kerr confirmed, it definitely wasn’t their new VR headsets.
Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr was on Zach Lowe’s, The Lowe Podcast to discuss signing Kevin Durant, what he’s hoping for next year, and how players are becoming more socially responsible. While he was there, he mentioned that the Warriors first encounter with Durant, didn’t get off to the best start:
“We kind of did a virtual reality thing where Kevin could put the VR set on and, showed from his seat in the locker room … what it would feel like to be a Warrior,”
“It’s one of those things where the production quality was good … you kind of want to bring something (unique) to the table. And then he put it on, and I think it malfunctioned at first,” Kerr said. “Within a couple of minutes, Rich Kleiman, his agent, was like, ‘Alright, let’s move on. Kevin wants to know what it would be like to be a Warrior.’ And I kind of chuckled I’m thinking ‘Well, we were kind of trying to show him.'”
Kerr went on to say that, once it got down to it, all they had to do was show Durant was the culture of the Warriors:
“You just have to go in just be yourselves and what you’re trying to sell,” Kerr said. “Which is just your culture and your players.”
“He’s not chasing rings, He’s been on one of the best teams in the league for many years.”
Can I get that VR function? I would love to see myself as a Warrior. If you want to check out the full podcast you can listen to it here.
