On Saturday, July 29, Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford will compete for welterweight supremacy in what is widely considered one of the biggest fights of the post-Floyd Mayweather Jr. era. Many have chosen to compare the showdown to iconic battles of yesteryear, including Hagler-Hearns, Leonard-Duran and Leonard-Hearns. During the final pre-fight press conference, Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza drew parallels between the highly-anticipated prizefight and an event that is taking the country by storm.
“Before I came to [Las] Vegas, I was back in New York. I went to [a] Drake and 21 Savage concert. [It was a] great show. [They delivered a] great performance. I had a great time,” Espinoza said.
“This is nothing against Drake or 21 Savage. They’re on tour. They’re performing on 54 dates. You have 54 opportunities to see those performances. This? Right here? Spence versus Crawford for the undisputed championship is one night. You have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to say that you saw it live.”
The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that Espinoza is referencing is arriving quickly. Both Crawford and Spence Jr. are set to step onto the scale for their final weigh-in this afternoon in Las Vegas. Afterward, the two men will return to their camps as they make the final preparations for the biggest fight of their respective careers thus far.
