The starters for the 2017 NBA All-Star Game were announced on Thursday. Among the major upsets was Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry getting the nod over Russell Westbrook.
Westbrook has been on an absolute tear as the sole star on his team. His run of triple-doubles has been widely publicized and he has carried his team to a 25-19 record.
But Curry has been no slouch himself. Even in a down year while adjusting to playing next to a similarly dominant player in Kevin Durant, Curry has been phenomenal and worthy of such an honor.
Curry spoke to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne about being voted in by fans, players, and the media:
“It’s a big storyline because those two guys are doing amazing things this year. There’s only two spots you can fill. Unfortunately somebody was going to get left out. I’ve been on the other side of that four years ago. It’s how it goes. The fact I get to represent my team in that game and to start is something that I definitely appreciate.”
Stephen Curry clearly believes he was worthy of the starting gig and he should. It’s not a knock on Westbrook so much as the fact that both have been great and deserve the starting job. Plus, this could lead to angry Russ tearing everyone apart during a glorified exhibition game. I am here for that.
