If you were a sportsman/woman who is awaiting a new contract in free agency. Would you rather be paid max and possibly be ridiculed because you aren’t max? Or paid less than max and not have the ‘max contract’ label weighing you down?
Most of you would take the max contract risk, I would. If you have the mind of sports athlete you always believe you’re worth it. Stephen Curry is the best player in the league at the moment and come 2017 will have the opportunity to get paid $175 Million in five years. But now that he is the best, he constantly thinks about currently being underpaid.
“I had to make a conscious decision and remind myself over and over [to let it go],” Curry told Yahoo Sports. “I could’ve had a different perspective and said, ‘I want to get everything that I could get, wait it out, test free agency that next year – and who knows what would’ve happened? But for me, a $44 million contract was plenty for me to be able to provide for my family. When I made a decision to sign an extension, I told myself that was the right decision for the moment.
“And, yeah, you should get paid market value, paid for what you’re worth, but at the time, for four years, I was comfortable with it. You can’t look back, because it’ll bring negativity. It’ll cause dissension in the team if you allow it to.“
Now back when he signed the $44 Million extension in 2012 he was that player with the constant ankle problem. Imagine if he never had the ankle problems? He would’ve been transcendent way earlier.
Actually now that I think about it. Who is his ankle brace provider? Because they should be the NBA provider for all ankle braces. Remember we thought it was chronic pain for Curry. We all thought that he would be that player that is decent but could never grow due to constant injuries. How wrong were we eh?
