Team USA missed a handful of notable players on their way to a 2016 Olympic Gold medal in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, James Harden and Russell Westbrook skipped the Olympics, but the one most notable absence was from two-time reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry. The Golden State Warriors star noted rest and injury rehab as reasons for skipping the Olympics.
But with some time until the next major tournaments come back around, the NBA All-Star made it known already, he’s coming back. He’ll be making a return to the Team USA roster for the 2019 FIBA World Cup and 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Stephen Curry said the following in a recent interview with FIBA.com.
“The way it went down this past year with the injury, it was the right decision,” Curry said to FIBA.com in his hometown of Charlotte, where he recently played for the Golden State Warriors against the Hornets.
“It was a tough one because I put a lot of equity into playing for Team USA and was looking forward to playing for the Olympic team for the first time.
“The decision for me personally was that it was best not to play, and to get ready for the season, to get healthy.
“Going forward, I do plan on playing at the World Cup (in 2019 in China), being healthy and being in a good position to be in Tokyo.”
