The two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry participated in a Q&A at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco recently. Talking points included basketball, of course, but some forward-thinking technological concepts had to be introduced as well.
For one, Curry talked about how he appreciates the technology that goes into his training and development. Another part of the conversation led to referees and the possibility of technology replacing them one day. Apparently, Curry would be all for it:
Curry also praised The Warriors’ aggressive push into training technologies like motion trackers. Asked what technology he’d be most interested in incorporating into his regiment, he joked, “One would be to just help me dunk more. I can’t do that. Something you can put in your calf.” As for whether he’d be okay with robots replaces refs, he added, “I would love that. But I would have to throw my mouthpiece at those new inventions.”
You can detect a hint of sarcasm from Curry. I don’t think he actually favors the idea of being officiated by robots.
As much as technology has an impact on the progression of just about all things, this isn’t a possibility for the near future. Besides, fans would still be liable to blame robot referees for calls they don’t like, maybe even more so than human referees. We’ve seen technology start to have a real impact on calls with more emphasis on reviewing plays through the NBA’s high-tech control center in Secaucus, New Jersey. We’ll see how far the NBA is willing to go with the trend of technological advancement when it comes to the function of the game.
