A few weeks ago, the NBA released a statement saying that they were concerned about North Carolina’s upcoming Anti-LGBT legislation, and that it could affect their plans to hold the 2017 All-Star Weekend in Charlotte.
Golden State Warriors point guard and reigning league MVP Stephen Curry is from the Charlotte area, and was asked about his opinions on the matter. From Marcus Thompson of Mercury News:
“I knew I would be asked about my views on the situation in North Carolina and potential ramifications on next year’s All-Star Game in Charlotte, which I hope can be resolved,” Curry said. “While I don’t know enough about the North Carolina law to comment more fully, no one should be discriminated against.”
Fairly political answer from Curry. He didn’t say anything leaning towards one way or the other all that much, but expressed the belief that everybody should be treated equally.
Curry knows that whatever he says, people will listen to. He’s playing basketball in a new, exciting way, just won MVP and a championship, and is the leader of one of the best teams in basketball history. Between all that, and his cute daughter Riley, Stephen Curry has a massive spotlight on him. He’s more universally-beloved than probably any player of his generation. Everybody’s watching him, and his words colossal influence. That’s why he has to choice them carefully.
