When Stephen Curry released his Under Armour Chef Curry 2 shoes, social media ridiculed him, and the shoes, endlessly. To the surprise of many, Curry opted not to wear the shoes in the NBA Finals. Curry has finally revealed why. From ESPN’s Darren Rovell:
He revealed for the first time Saturday that he was ready to wear them for Game 4, but was talked out of it by Warriors general manager Bob Myers and his agent Jeff Austin, who were concerned about the low cut given Curry’s history of ankle issues.
That is certainly a fair concern. Prior to his days as an NBA superstar, Curry was widely regarded as a sweet-shooting point guard with ankles made of glass. The year before Curry’s breakout campaign in which he averaged 22.9 points per game, Curry’s ankle issues limited him to just 26 games played.
Now, of course, Curry is at worst a top-three NBA player. He’s the most dominant shooting threat that the sport of basketball has ever seen. However, you’ve got to wonder if the Warriors’ brass is, in the back of their minds, terrified that Curry’s ankle problems will resurface. As fans of the NBA, we have to hope that Curry will remain healthy, but you never know. Avoiding wearing low-cut shoes seems to be the logical move for Curry.
