Star Trek: Picard originally wasn’t going to have a traditional showrunner. Instead the plans were that it’d be run by a team of people. However, it seems those plans have changed as author Michael Chabon was announced Thursday as the miniseries’ showrunner.
Chabon released a statement regarding the news. “Star Trek has been an important part of my way of thinking about the world, the future, human nature, storytelling and myself since I was ten years old. I come to work every day in a state of joy and awe at having been entrusted with the character and the world of Jean-Luc Picard, with this vibrant strand of the rich, intricate and complex tapestry that is Trek.”
Not much is known about the upcoming series other than Patrick Stewart’s return to his iconic role. It will tell the life story of Star Fleet Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, who is now an Admiral, according to the short teaser we got. But, the series is just one of CBS’ many Star Trek projects in development. It seems like they’re trying to build a Star Trek universe on the small screen as they’ve had in the past. There’s an animated series in development from Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan called Star Trek: Lower Decks. It will chronicle the life and times of the crew who work on the lower decks of one of Star Fleet’s most important ships. Then, there’s also a Star Trek: Discovery spin-off in the works set to follow Michelle Yeoh’s character.
