Global Citizen has enlisted a number of “A-List” celebrities for its upcoming social media rally, Stand Up For Ukraine. Per Billboard, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, legendary producer Pharrell Williams, iconic recording artist Stevie Wonder and pop star The Weeknd are among the many stars that have stepped up to support the campaign. As described by Billboard, Stand Up For Ukraine will consist of celebrities posting social media messages about the ongoing conflict in Europe while encouraging others to donate to humanitarian efforts in the area.
“Millions of people are fleeing the bombs falling on Ukrainian cities,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leye stated.
“The world must stand up for them. The European Union is catering for the needs of the millions of refugees it hosts. And we will further step up. But so much is needed – and the brave people of Ukraine deserve solidarity from citizens and states around the globe. Together, we can give them a safe home and bring some light in their lives at this dark hour.”
As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues, more than three million people have fled Ukraine and moved into neighboring countries. Still, 12 million people are reportedly in need of assistance and 6.5 million are still displaced.
Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau and I will host a global pledging event on 9 April, in partnership with @GlblCtzn.
Leaders, artists, citizens from all around the world will join #StandUpForUkraine to help cater for the needs of the refugees and internally displaced.
