Stan Van Gundy may have selected the future rookie of the year in Stanley Johnson with the 8th Overall pick. Johnson has already mentioned that he wants to follow LeBron James path, which is a good start already. Gundy discussed why they picked Johnson and why he may be key next year. According to the Zach Lowe Podcast:
“When you go 32-50, nobody has got a spot locked in. I’m looking for the best chance to win. So yes, either at the 2 or the 3. If he gives us a better chance to win, then yeah he will start.”
“The guy he reminds me of is Jimmy Butler in terms of toughness”
Jimmy Butler was not nearly as talented as Stanley Johnson was when he entered the NBA for sure, but I see the resemblance from a physical stand point, and maybe a hair cut. Johnson is my personal favorite to win ROY and push the Pistons to the Playoffs, something they haven’t seen in a while. Can Stanley Johnson be the wing player the Pistons are looking for? We’ll see starting October, Stan Van Gundy sure makes me excited to see him play.
