Stan Van Gundy Reportedly Reaches Principle Deal With Detroit Pistons
The Detroit Pistons and Stan Van Gundy have reportedly agreed in principle to a five-year, $35 million deal that will make Van Gundy the head coach as well as the president of basketball operations in Detroit. The Golden State Warriors were reported as pursuing and even interviewing Van Gundy, but the Pistons seemed more willing to provide the front office position along with the head coaching gig.
As president of basketball operations, Van Gundy will replace Joe Dumars who stepped down from the position in April after 14 seasons as Detroit’s main executive. Van Gundy will of course be tasked with filling the personnel around him in the front office, but more importantly on the Pistons roster. Josh Smith and Andre Drummond will be two vital projects, along with Brandon Jennings, and what will become of Greg Monroe this summer as a restricted free agent. As Van Gundy makes his way back into the NBA stratosphere as a head coach and executive, we will see how he approaches the tall order of re-vitalizing the struggling Pistons franchise.
