San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard hasn’t played a game of NBA basketball in over six months – since May 14. With 35-year-old point guard Tony Parker set to return from a similar injury, the question “what’s wrong with Kawhi Leonard?” must be asked. And the Spurs don’t have an answer. From Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News:
“They are perplexed by how long it’s taken him to get better,” a source said of the Spurs.
This report comes just three days after head coach Gregg Popovich said that he had “never, never” seen anything like Leonard’s injury.
Parker has been cleared to play after rupturing his left quadriceps tendon in May, but the Spurs have yet to give a prediction as to when Leonard will return.
Leonard, 26, was drafted 15th overall by the Pacers in 2011 and was traded to the Spurs on draft day.
Since being drafted, Leonard has outperformed expectations to the nth degree; his NBA resume already consists of a championship, a Finals MVP, two All-Star appearances, two All-NBA First Team selections, two Defensive Player of the Year awards and four All-Defensive Team selections.
Last season for the Spurs, Leonard averaged a career-high 25.5 points per game on .485/.380/.880 shooting, and chipped in 5.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
