The San Antonio Spurs are signing veteran big man Joel Anthony to a rest-of-season contract, the team announced Sunday morning.
This deal comes after Anthony signed two 10-day contracts with the club, impressing the organization with his maturity and defensive abilities in the short time.
Anthony, a 10-year NBA forward that went undrafted back in 2007, still provides a veteran sense and locker room presence that Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is known to value.
This will be Anthony’s fourth team in the NBA, with the 34-year-old previously playing for the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons. He won two championships with the Heat back in 2012 and 2013.
The Spurs have kept tabs on Anthony throughout the course of the season, with Anthony playing for the team during the preseason in September before being cut.
In eight games with San Antonio this season, Joel Anthony has averaged 1.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in 6.3 minutes. He holds career averages of 2.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and 14.6 minutes.
Anthony will earn a total of $498,000 in his new deal with the Spurs, according to The Vertical’s Bobby Marks.
