Sol ChYld is thinking about moving back down south, and with the way she puts it, it sounds like the best idea anyone has ever come up with.
The Camden native’s ReBirth. Theory has been out for nearly two weeks, but I can’t stop hitting play on her Hollywood Cole-produced track, “South.” Serving as the outro for an album that leans more in the realm of jazzier, soulful Hip-Hop, the nearly three-minute lyrical exercise leans on production that is more trap-leaning, with keys that almost feel hypnotic. Sol ChYld immediately finds her place within the head-nodding production from Hollywood Cole, hopping in at the six-second to rap the song’s anthemic hook:
I might move my a** down south. I might f—k around and put a gold grill in my mouth. I might f—k around and fly out west or out of town. Even though I’m from the east, they say my a** down south.
At the moment the chorus ends, Sol ChYld and the keys take over as she cleverly pops her s—t. From delivering comedic lines about her weed man who looks like Kevin Federline to declaring that she’s on top like Canada, the ReBirth. Theory artist is brimming with confidence as she showcases her ability to adapt to any production.
The second verse is equally ear-catching as the Camden shifts her flow and approaches it with a more laid-back tone while still making listeners scrunch their faces and acknowledge that this is one of the project’s standout tracks. One by one, she lists off the things on her wish list.
I just want the queso.
I want the fetta bleu cheese.
I’d put the funds back in the art, then the hood, and then do me.
I’d cop a couple of acres. Give a f—k about a neighbor or a hater.
The end of the second verse clears the runway for the song’s chorus to fade into black as the track comes to a close. “South” has an energy that is infectious and will propel it into end-of-year lists at publications. From Chris Patrick to Sol ChYld and so many artists in between, New Jersey is having a moment and once again showing why it’s one of the most underrated areas for Hip-Hop, R&B, and so much more.
