Over the past year, Instagram and Facebook have stepped into the lane that Snapchat used to occupy exclusively. With the introduction of Facebook stories, IGTV, Instagram stories and more, Facebook and Instagram have become more like Snapchat. As a result, questions have come up about how Snapchat will look to distinguish itself in the social media landscape. It appears that Snapchat may be looking into the gaming space to separate itself from the likes of Facebook and Instagram.
According to a report from The Information, Snapchat is looking to develop a gaming hub inside of its app in the future. As reported by Tom Dotan and Amir Efrati of The Information, “The company is preparing to launch a platform this fall that will let outside developers create games to be played through the Snapchat app.” Dotan and Efrati added, “It already has lined up at least one gaming publisher to make a game for the new platform.”
Snapchat’s foray into the gaming sphere follows in the footsteps of WeChat, which has used its large user base to funnel new users into its Chinese gaming partner, Tencent. In the past, Facebook and MySpace had large gaming platforms. In the meantime, Snapchat has yet to publicly comment on the story, but we will update you as more information becomes available.
