According to a report from app researcher, Ishan Agarwal, coding with Snapchat has revealed that Snapchat is working on an unreleased feature called “Eagle”. “Eagle” appears to be a camera search feature that allows users to identify a product, song, etc. simply by using the app. If true, this feature would definitely make the social media app more of an everyday tool rather than just another app to communicate with friends. More importantly, this feature could possibly open up a new revenue stream with companies like Amazon and Shazam. For a company that posted a $385 million loss last quarter, this could be what changes the tide for Snapchat going forward.
Eagle could potentially build off of a previously explored feature from 2016 that allowed users to identify songs playing nearby. Project Eagle builds off of that idea and allows for visual search as well. This feature would allow users to look up products by scanning bar codes. If Eagle comes to fruition, it would work alongside Snapchat’s newly released “context cards” function. Between “context cards” and “Eagle”, Snapchat would now have the ability to identify products, identify songs, pull up business contact info, pull up movie tickets and restaurant reservations and work alongside ride sharing apps. In other words, welcome to the future!ca
