Michael Carter-Williams is one of the few Sixers players who could make it onto another NBA roster. After rumors circulated this past summer that MCW was on the trading block, ESPN’s Chad Ford reports that last years NBA Rookie of The Year is once again being made available for trades.
“I’ve heard a lot of rumblings from GMs that Carter-Williams is available,” Ford says. “There are some in ownership and in the front office, though not all, that don’t see him as a long-term piece of the puzzle.”
There were rumors leading up to the draft that Philadelphia was trying to deal their young point guard in an effort to try and draft Dante Exum.
“There was a lot of chatter that direction before the draft and in the past few weeks,” Ford said. “I know several teams have had exploratory discussions with the Sixers. I think the challenge right now is that the Sixers will want a lot in return and MCW’s play, to date this season, hasn’t warranted multiple first round picks for him. That makes him tough to deal.”
Carter-Williams is averaging 15.3 points, 7.2 assists and 4.4 turnovers per game. He’s shooting 38.1 percent from the field and 23.7 percent on 3-pointers. He’s still productive and young, but apparently that’s not the progress the Philadelphia wants to see.
There are teams who could use a young, promising point guard like the Nets, Rockets, Knicks, Lakers, and Pacers. Whether or not they have the assets to acquire MCW, or the Sixers would pull the trigger, still remains to be seen
