Six Reasons Why Students Should Watch TED Talks

  • March 28, 2019

TED Talks

Ted Talks for students are like the expensive coaching courses we start to receive once we enter the workplace. In both cases, they might not be compulsory, but they can be fantastic ways to improve yourself while learning new skills.

In fact, this applies to other types of media, and not just Ted Talks, although they’re generally the best because of the quality on offer. When you watch a Ted Talk, you get the best in the world, no matter what the subject matter is.

And so with that in mind, let’s take a look at why we should take the time to check out the best Ted Talks for students.

• They’re free

Unlike traditional education, which can cost a lot of money and leave you with huge loans that you’ll struggle to repay, Ted Talks are absolutely free. The only cost that you have to worry about is the cost of your internet connection, and if you’re struggling with that then you can always access the internet through your college’s library.

• They can help with essays

To buy essay or not to buy an essay, that is the question. The good news is that it can become a moot point if you watch enough Ted Talks for college students. With a little perseverance and a lot of notetaking, you can learn everything you need to get an A in any subject. Of course, it also takes a lot of time, so don’t leave it until the last minute.

• They’re the best in the field

There are alternatives to Ted Talks, but they’re usually not as good. That’s because Ted has built up a reputation as a leader in the field and so they attract the very best. It’s good practice to always check credentials before you take sources at face value, but with Ted, it’s a pretty good bet that they’ve done plenty of due diligence before deciding whether to accept a talk or not.

• You can access extras

One of the great things about learning from Ted Talks is that you can often find supporting materials such as notes, guides and slides. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s a whole community around their content, and so you can often find third-party commentators responding to and building upon any given Ted Talk in blog posts and videos of their own.

• It’s cutting edge

It’s easy for lecturers to fall into bad habits and to keep presenting the same material to their students. The problem is that disruption is happening across every industry at an unprecedented scale and they risk losing the hands-on experience that you get when you work in the field. With Ted Talks, you can be surer that the information that you’re learning is relevant, up-to-date and about what’s happening now and not what was happening ten years ago.

• You can watch them again

As well as being able to access Ted Talks from a range of internet-connected devices from laptops and tablets to smartphones and even video games consoles, you can also watch them as many times as you like. That gives them a huge advantage over traditional college lectures, which are rarely recorded and available on demand, although that’s starting to change. This makes it much easier for you to go back and to check over any notes that you’re unsure of and to get additional value from the same lecture.

Conclusion

Now that you know the value of Ted Talks for students, the next step is for you to go ahead and start researching the different talks that are out there. With over 2,500 Ted Talks and 100,00 TedX videos, there’s no shortage of choice.

The trick is identifying an area you’re interested in and then running a few searches to see what’s out there. If you find a Ted Talk that you enjoy, see if the speaker has done any others. You might just be surprised by the quality of the free content that’s out there just waiting for you to enjoy it. Good luck – and happy learning.
