On Thursday, May 23, former President Donald Trump returned to his home state of New York for a rally in the Bronx. During the event, the former President brought out two surprise guests, Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow. The two Brooklyn-raised MCs stood side by side with the presumptive Republican nominee and offered words of support for his campaign.
“Trump’s going to shout the wins for all of us,” Sheff G said.
“Make America great again,” Sleepy Hallow added.
Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow’s appearance was met with cheers from the crowd, but was greeted with criticism on social media and news broadcasts later in the day.
“Get this corny s—t out of here. Like, seriously Complex? How much coverage did and do you give rappers who criticize Donald Trump?” Enfield, North Carolina Mayor William (Mondale) Robinson commented after finding a clip of the rally on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“This really makes me disappointed in Sheff and Sleep, man,” another comment reads.
While some criticized Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow for endorsing Trump, others suggested it may be a move to receive a pardon if he is elected in November. Both rappers are currently being accused of using money and influence as successful artists to “encourage others to do some of the gang violence that’s just critically important to them and their status in the community.”
“It is how, in part, Sheff G and Tegan Chambers — Sleepy Hallow — assert influence, right? Because they take people out, and they’re able to spend money, and they’re able to encourage others to do some of the gang violence that’s just critically important to them and their status in the community,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said.
Despite the criticism aimed in his direction, Sheff G’s attorney, Arthur Aidala, remains “cautiously optimistic” that he will be exonerated. Both Sleepy Hallow and Sheff G have plead guilty to the conspiracy charges levied against them.
