Shaquille O’Neal played against generations of elite guards in his career, some of the best of all time — big guards, small guards, and freak hybrids. Steph Curry made a prominent leap last season in the conversation of today’s elite guards, winning MVP and his first NBA title.
Talking with media at the SMU Athletic Forum, Shaq doesn’t just cite Curry as one of his favorite players to watch, but gives the Warriors point guard high praise for his dominance last season. Check out Shaq’s comments in the video below. He starts speaking on Curry about a minute in.
“I like watching Steph Curry,” O’Neal said. “He’s something that I haven’t really seen. I really haven’t seen a small guard dominate like he did. You know Nash did it every now and then, but Steph Curry, like took over the game. If you look at him, I saw him a couple weeks ago in New York, and no offense to him but he looks like a little baby. He has no arm muscles, no chest muscles.”
Lets remember that everyone is considered puny to Shaq, but his humorous description of Curry is exactly what’s made him unique since college. Curry isn’t the quickest, fastest, strongest, or most athletic, but he’ll light you up all the same. As far as dominant small guards, Curry has put himself right in the mix with the Steve Nash’s and Allen Iverson’s, and with an NBA championship under his belt, he has something that they don’t.
