Boxing is an unforgiving sport in which fans often beg for fights that will not be made now, if ever. However, in recent years, many of those fights that fans used to dream about have become realities. Who can forget when Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford met in Las Vegas in 2023? How could any boxing fan not have been excited when Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury went toe-to-toe not once, but twice? Best of all, the world watched Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano meet not once or twice, but thrice. Now, fans in the U.S. and around the world have their sights set on another dream matchup — Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs. Shakur Stevenson.
Shakur Stevenson is riding high after defending his WBC Lightweight Championship against William Zepeda during the Ring III card in New York last week. Now, he’s looking toward his next challenge, and he hopes it will be Gervonta “Tank” Davis. During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Stevenson talked openly about the fight.
“Do you think it will be your next one?” Helwani asked Stevenson about the possibility of fighting Davis.
“I think it could be,” Stevenson replied. “I don’t put it past him. Whenever he picks up the phone and says, ‘Yo, let’s make this fight happen,’ it’s going to happen.”
Helwani followed up, “What is the step now that you make in terms of trying to get this done?”
“I think the main step is uh…..One of us has got to find a way to reach out and try to get the fight to happen. It can’t be no little kid s—t. It can’t be no…back-and-forth. We’ve got to be grown men and get the fight done. That’s how I feel. I would love to talk to him and have a real conversation and make this fight happen, but you know, some guys are egotistical. I don’t know where his ego is at,” Stevenson continued.
If the fight can be made, Stevenson is confident that it could be the biggest fight in the sport. In fact, he feels it’s a big enough event to be hosted at MetLife Stadium or Yankee Stadium.
“MetLife is probably the [biggest]. [It’s] where the Giants and Jets play,” Helwani said.
“That’s where we’ve got to fight,” Stevenson replied.
“That would be sick…or Yankee Stadium,” Helwani continued.
“Yankee Stadium…whatever is the biggest stadium,” Stevenson said.
Before Stevenson can get in the ring with Davis, Davis has business of his own to take care of. The reigning WBA Lightweight Champion was reportedly on track to fight Lamont Roach on August 16, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, the fight appears to be up in the air as the fight has not yet been announced, and Davis was recently arrested in Florida. Davis nor his promoter has issued a statement regarding the Baltimore natives legal status or his future in the sport.
