Shakira is the latest global superstar to be honored in the Brick City. On Tuesday, September 12, MTV will bestow the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award upon Shakira at the 2023 Video Music Awards in Newark, New Jersey. Previous award recipients include LL Cool J, Missy Elliott, Kanye West, Rihanna and Beyoncé among others.
“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire & influence the masses with her unique, musical prowess. She’s a trailblazer for women around the world & one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music,” Bruce Gillmer of MTV’s parent company, Paramount, said.
“Her massive impact across the musical landscape will be long-lasting as she continues to create and entertain at the highest level.”
Shakira will not only receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, but she is also nominated in three categories, including Best Latin, Best Collaboration and Artist of the Year. Not to be forgotten, she is also listed as a performer alongside Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin and Stray Kids.
