Sha’Carri Richardson came into the Olympic Trials as the favorite in the women’s 100m. She showed exactly why she had that reputation in the semi-finals and finals of the 100. With a talented field, perhaps the most challenging Richardson has faced, the 5’1″ speedster didn’t seem bothered whatsoever. Her orange hair and signature matching nails highlighting her path all the way down the straightaway.
The race unfolded in a wonderful way. After posting the fastest time in the semis, a wind-aided 10.64, Richardson was ready to put down a quick time. Into a headwind during the final, rivals Javianne Oliver and Gabby Thomas gave her a run for her money. She was not out of the blocks with as much power as her bigger competitors, but at about 40-50 meters in, you knew she was bringing the heat.
Richardson sped through the last 30 meters to take a commanding lead and put the rest of the field away. Her time of 10.86 was a statement, and so was the last phase of her race. She showed power and determination as she went by Oliver.
