Seventeen states have told the U.S. Supreme Court that they support Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s bid to overturn the results of last month’s election. The latest backing for Paxton comes just hours after he asked the Supreme Court for permission to sue four states that President-Elect Joe Biden won in November.
Currently, the states who have publicly backed Paxton’s legal bid are all represented by Republican attorney generals. The list includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, Montana, Louisiana, Nebraska, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia. In addition to being represented by Republican attorney generals, President Donald Trump won the popular vote in all of those states.
Democratic lawmakers have shot down the lawsuit through social media. Recently, Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh told a Maryland resident that his state would not join in on the growing legal action.
“The suit is a cesspool of disproved charges, wild speculation, insupportable arguments and silly gibberish,” Frosh stated.
“Joe Biden is the President-Elect.”
The four states in which Paxton hopes to overturn election results are Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Biden defeated Trump in all of those states, but Paxton believes their results should be thrown out because the states made “improper” changes to their voting procedures leading up to Election Day.
Representatives from the four states have not issued a statement as of yet.
