Tennis champion Serena Williams has elected to withdraw from the U.S. Open due to a hamstring injury.
“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,” she wrote to fans on Instagram.
“New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play — I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone from afar.”
Williams first experienced difficulty with her hamstring in June during Wimbledon. Since then, she has remained sidelined from the Olympics and other major tournaments.
Unfortunately, Williams is not the only tennis star to pull out of the US Open. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem have also withdrawn from this year’s U.S. Open.
The last Grand Slam of the year is set to begin on Monday.
