There’s something about press conferences that gives coaches confidence in everything. We all have it, when we get a sense of a clean slate, a new feeling of confidence goes through you. Clearly. Scott Brooks has some new found confidence even though he doesn’t have an offense plan other than an Durant Iso or a Westbrook/Ibaka pick & roll. But I digress.
In a recent post by Royce Young of ESPN.com, Scott Brooks thinks that Russell Westbrook is the best point guard in the game today.
“I believe Russell is the best point guard in basketball,” Brooks said, unprompted. “That’s happened over time. I’ve seen Russell every practice, every game, every film session, and he’s really put a lot of time into being the best point guard in basketball.”
As you’d expect, though, Westbrook concurred with his coach’s statement.
“I do,” he said. “I’m very honored to hear him say that, but that’s how I feel. I mean, I don’t know what to tell you.
Very humble. Oh wait. Scratch that.
“I’ve felt that since I got in the league,” Westbrook said. “I mean, that’s my mindset. As a rookie, I came in and I felt like I was the best player on the floor every time I stepped on the floor. That’s just my mindset. That’s the way I’ve played since college. It’s not just this year or last year. It’s how I think when I get on the basketball floor.“
Ah there’s the Westbrook we know and love.
Don’t get it twisted. You don’t succeed unless you have that “I’m the best” attitude. All the greats had it and future greats will have it.
We can all agree Russell Westbrook isn’t the best in the league. I’m not putting it past him. But I still think the best point guard always averages more than 8 assists per game. Sure you can make up for it by scoring points but somebody has to dish right?
It’s the point guard’s job to dish out assists. It’s why Chris Paul is considered the best. It’s why Stephen Curry is considered the second best (don’t argue you know it’s true) and as soon as Scott Brooks gets an actual offense. The quicker Westbrook can thrive in terms of assists and only THEN. Could I possibly call Russell Westbrook the best point guard in the game.
