Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Caleb Plant are reportedly nearing a deal to fight on September 18th to become the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world. Mike Coppinger first reported the deal via Twitter on July 20.
“Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant are closing in on a deal for a Sept. 18 bout in Las Vegas, a PBC on Fox PPV, for the undisputed 168-pound championship. One-fight offer from PBC that would likely earn Alvarez a career-high payday,” Coppinger tweeted.
If the deal goes through, it would mark a number of firsts in Alvarez’s career. Most notably, it would mark the first time he has the ability to become the undisputed champion of a weight class. In addition, it would mark the first time he’s fought on pay-per-view since 2018.
On the other end, Plant is likely headed for the biggest payday of his career. More importantly, Alvarez presents an opportunity for Plant to get the biggest win of his career.
With the Plant and Alvarez bout nearly finalized, it opens the door for Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, who were once thought to be backup plans for Alvarez, to secure other fights.
