On May 8th, Netflix announced the renewal of the horror comedy Santa Clarita Diet for a third season.
The series, which revolves around a typical American family (led by Drew Barrymore and Justified’s Timothy Olyphant) whose lives are turned upside down when Barrymore’s character becomes, for lack of better terms, a zombie (A sentient and non-decaying zombie, but still man-eating). Despite the outlandish plot and generally being overshadowed by Netflix’s marquee original half hour comedies such as “Grace and Frankie” and “GLOW,” the show has received critical praise in both seasons, particularly for the performances of the starring and supporting cast.
Still, some fans were concerned over the show’s future, in part due to Netflix “cleaning house” of much of their half hour comedy series in recent months, cancelling shows such as “Love,” “Lady Dynamite,” “Haters Back Off,” “Disjointed,” and “Everything Sucks!” There was also concerns over the fact that several actors who portray integral supporting characters on the show have upcoming commitments to other projects; including Skylar Gisondo, Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Nathan Fillion. While nothing else has been confirmed yet, it’s likely they will all be back for the third season.
This comes less than a month after the cancellation of TV’s other quasi-zombie horror comedy series, Ash vs. Evil Dead. While the structures of the shows’ are very different, it should be interesting to see if Santa Clarita Diet can make a play for those disaffected viewers who like their gore with a side of laughs.
Season 3 is expected to premiere in mid 2019.
