The SMU Mustangs have picked up the commitment of Lousiville Cardinals junior forward transfer Samuell Williamson. Louisville moved on from Head Coach Chris Mack this season and hired Kenny Payne as their new Head Coach. That being said the former top recruit struggled to find a consistent role in his three years with the Louisville Cardinals. The Texas native returns to his home state with two years of college eligibility left if he chooses to use his fifth year of COVID eligibility.
Samuell Williamson has committed to SMU, he told @Stockrisers. Took a visit this weekend and was blown away with the program and it’s refresh with a new staff. He’s heading home and will be an instant impact for them.

Samuell Williamson had a key reserve role as a sophomore in limited games, but as a junior, his role was shortened. In 16.9 minutes in his third year, he averaged 5.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. He paired those numbers with a field goal percentage of 45.6 percent and a three-point percentage of 15.4 percent. The hope with his move to SMU is he will be given a larger role and can thrive back in his home state.

Roster turnover like this happens when new coaches are hired and this is no exception. Coming out of high school Samuell Williamson was a highly touted recruit and hopefully, with a new program, he can recapture some of that shine. It is likely that with the SMU Mustangs he will be a focal point on offense and receive more touches than he could have with the Lousiville Cardinals. Returning home can mean a lot for players looking for a fresh start.
