Sam Dekker will be a first round pick in tonight’s NBA Draft. In Def Pen’s mock draft he’s slated to go at 16 to the Boston Celtics.
During an interview with the Huffington Post, Dekker said something that was pretty obvious, but something most people don’t have the courage to say out loud. He was asked what players he likes to pattern his game after.
Dekker’s response.
“Well, there’s a few,” Dekker said as he thought about how he wanted to phrase his answer. “Um, you know, there’s always, there’s always, me, um, the way I play, being a white guy, a lot of times you get compared to other white guys.”
“I mean, if you go down that line, guys like Gordon Hayward, Chandler Parsons, you know, guys of this era right now that are pretty athletic who can get up and down, stretch the floor, shoot the ball, put it on the floor.”
Marc Lamont Hill, who interviewed Dekker interjected and said, “Which isn’t fair because your game isn’t necessarily like a particular white guy.”
Dekker then said he can compare himself to Trevor Ariza.
To be honest, I watch a lot of college basketball and while yes Dekker may have a lot of Gordon Hayward in him, I don’t see the Chandler Parsons comparison. Dekker can play lock down defense something Parsons does nothing off.
I’m not one to agree with a lot of what Reggie Miller says, but one thing he said during the NCAA Tournament I will agree with, he said Sam Dekker is a poor mans Kevin Durant which I fully agree with. Obviously he’s not KD and not many are, but not only is Dekker built like last seasons MVP, both are 6’9 and around 230lbs, but the play exactly the same.
Both players are long, are deadly shooters from the outside but also can attack the basket and finish at the rim. Again I’m not saying he IS Kevin Durant and neither did Reggie Miller, but a poor man’s version which still is pretty good, absolutely.
