The Sacramento Kings have had some rough seasons as of late. The team hasn’t been over .500 since the 2005-06 season.
On paper, Sacramento looked like they should have been pretty good last season. Star center DeMarcus Cousins had another phenomenal season, Rudy Gay scored well as per usual, and point guard Darren Collison had a great season as well. However, their individual success didn’t translate to the team’s record, as the Kings finished a paltry 29-53.
The Kings are looking to improve the team by way of upgrading the backcourt. From Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix:
Hearing Kings ownership pushing hard for a pursuit of free agents Rajon Rondo and Monta Ellis. Likely Sacramento can only afford one.

It’s probably for the best that the Kings can’t afford both Rondo and Ellis, as the pairing of the two didn’t go so well in Dallas.
Rondo and Monta aren’t the only high profile guards the Kings are after. From Chris Broussard of ESPN:
Sources: Kings like FA's @RajonRondo & @JLin7. Eyes Ty Lawson, Dennis Schroder, Jrue Holiday n trades. Plan 2 play another PG w/DCollison

Lawson and Holiday are both big names who have proven themselves in this league. Schroeder is a great young talent who has drawn comparisons to Rondo. Lin seems a bit out of place. He’s a solid point guard, but I wouldn’t value him as highly as the others. Another point guard who the Kings are rumored to be interested in is Phoenix’s Eric Bledsoe.
It’s also interesting that the Kings plan to play another point guard along side Collison. At just 6’0″ Collison is way too short to play shooting guard, so I guess the Kings want to run a two point guard line-up similar to that of last year’s Phoenix Suns.
It’s a mystery as to who the Kings will land, but one thing’s for sure: They’re doing all they can to acquire a big-name guard.
