Suns general manager Ryan McDonough is keenly aware of the shifting landscape in the NBA and knows he will have to keep up or get left behind. The Suns are 12-20 and remain entirely out of the realm of a spot in the playoffs, but because of the young talent on the roster have a real upside.
According to Scott Bordow of AZ Central, McDonough knows what moves he will need to make if he has hopes of his team ever competing for anything meaningful in the NBA.
“There are certain core pieces that are starting to solidify,” McDonough said. “I think we’d be foolish or naïve to wait forever or be overly patient. We’ve been, I think, relatively disciplined with contracts we’ve given out in terms of length and dollars, but yeah, we’re planning on being one of five of six teams with a decent amount of cap space, and we’ll see if we can improve the team.”
The emergence of Devin Booker, Dragan Bender, and Marquese Chriss, combined with the steady production of T.J. Warren, has created a solid base for the Suns to build on in the future.
The draft lottery the past three seasons has proven to be fruitful for the Phoenix front office. The upcoming draft and free agency class has McDonough enthusiastic about the myriad possibilities to add talent to the roster this summer.
“We’ll probably be more aggressive in June and July than we have been the last couple of years,” McDonough said.
…
“One of the things we’re excited about in this draft is if all the players we expect to declare are in, I think the strength of the draft is where we can use some help, at the one and the five primarily,” McDonough said. “We’re kind of searching for answers long-term at those positions.”
